If you’re from the 90s, you probably grew up playing 8-Bit games. When I first opened undertale, it had the familiar look and feel of a typical 8-Bit RPG Game. The game starts with the player, a human kid who falls down through a hole into the underground – which is filled with monsters. The player has to find a way to get back to the surface by going through mazes, solving puzzles and fighting creatures. Thus, the journey of a human child from the underground to surface. So, A typical RPG then? NO!
What’s so special about it?
-
A Beautiful Tale
Though the story line sounds pretty simple, it’s surprisingly complex. If I say more, I’d be spoiling the tale for you.
-
You get the ending you deserve
The game has multiple endings based on the choices made by the player during the game. Face the consequence of your choices -
The Characters
The roster of the characters in the game are delightful, quirky and full of bad puns. You can’t help falling in love with them. -
Fighting is not the only way to win
Every time you encounter a monster, you’re given about half a dozen choices. Fighting isn’t the only way to win the battle.
-
The Music
The OST of the game is absolutely remarkable. The tunes just are catchy and will be stuck in your head for days. Some tracks hit you right in the feels. The game developer Toby Fox, has scored the music as well! -
Dogs! And more Dogs!
If you’re a dog person, then you’re in for a ‘treat’. 😉
-
Determination
The mysterious force that motivates you to move forward in the game – DETERMINATION. -
Gender-less Player
He? She? Nope. Just Human. The player is depicted as a young human child of ambiguous age, gender, and ethnicity who wears a striped light magenta-and-blue shirt blue pants. Throughout the game, monsters refer to you using “they” and “them” pronouns, when not using common nouns such as “human” and “child”.
-
Crazy Universe
Buy donuts to help spiders go to college, Date a skeleton, Do a cooking show with a killer robot, lie down with a Ghost DJ and trip on some intense visuals. So much more!
-
A cocktail of Emotions
There will be tears. You’ll feel happy, sad, guilty, bad and even ashamed of yourself. Some people claim that it has changed their lives.
I could keep going on and on why I love this game but I’m stopping here so that there is still an element of surprise if you ever play the game.
